Highland Park marching band parade

April 25th, 2009
Comments Off

The Highland Park marching band and parade takes place in the afternoon on the third Friday in May, in this case May 15th, 2009 around 2:00 PM. The marching band does play in the street (for both Highland and Fir Grove students), but we do not use any sound amplification devices. The Beaverton City Police would block of the section of Wilson between the two schools, but only for 15 minutes, and with side streets still open to go around.
All are welcome to come and watch the parade!

Scholarship winners announced!

April 17th, 2009

For the last several years, Highland NAC has been giving out scholarships to seniors in our neighborhood.  During the last 2 years, we have been able to provide for two scholarships each year.  Each year we have about 4 students apply for scholarships, but this year, we received nearly double what is a “typical” year.  The scholarship committee is always impressed by the students academic performance and community involvement and this year was no exception!

We are delighted to present scholarships to our 2008-2009 scholarship winners Daniel Nguyen and Sophie Carlson.  Both of these seniors have demonstrated through their high school years, their commitment to the community.

Please join us during the May HNAC meeting, in which we will be awarding Daniel and Sophie the scholarships.

Beaverton Recycling Day

April 13th, 2009
Comments Off

** If you are interested in volunteering, which helps fund our scholarships and other activities throughout the year, please contact… chair@highlandnac.org **

Saturday, June 13, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

3950 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. (former Westgate Theatre Site)

This exciting new FREE event will give Beaverton residents the opportunity to recycle some of those “hard to recycle” items you have around your home.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL BE COLLECTED? (This is a tentative list — to be finalized soon)
Television sets, computer monitors, electronic equipment, cell phones, household batteries, textiles and reusable household goods, scrap metal and small appliances, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs, Styrofoam, bicycles and helmets, and cardboard.

HOW CAN I HELP MY NAC AND COMMUNITY?
The City has allocated $6,000 (that was formerly used for garbage disposal fees) to BCCI and the NACs. The money will be divided up based on the number of volunteers from each NAC. More volunteers from your NAC means a greater share of the money for your neighborhood.

WHEN CAN I HELP?
On Saturday, June 13, there will be two, four-hour volunteer shifts:
• 8:00 AM – 12:00 Noon – This shift will begin with event set-up and mandatory volunteer training.
• 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM – This shift will begin with mandatory volunteer training and end with event clean-up.

WHAT WILL I DO AS A VOLUNTEER?
We will be working with several recycling collectors/processors on the day of the event. The two main tasks will be guiding traffic through various drop-off points at the site and helping unload materials from vehicles. Some light-duty tasks will be available.

WILL THERE STILL BE A NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP DAY?
No — this new event replaces the Clean-Up Day. See the back side of this sheet for information.
Your volunteer help will earn money for your NAC and help Beaverton residents recycle materials that are hard to recycle at home. Together, we can help save energy and resources by recycling and reduce toxic materials getting buried in a landfill. Sign-up today!
